Karachi Police have released the driver who killed a young delivery rider in Defense Housing Authority (DHA) on Monday on just ‘personal surety’ without an FIR, it emerged.

Videos circulating on social media show 26-year-old delivery rider Farhan Ali standing beside his motorcycle near a house close to the main Saba Avenue signal when a speeding car overturned and ploughed into him.

He died on the spot as a result of the crash.

On Tuesday, South DIG Syed Asad Raza said police had “detained” the injured driver, identified as Hasan Banghwar, and shifted him to Sahil police station for legal formalities after he received medical treatment.

According to the DIG, the driver was later released on “personal surety” with the consent of the deceased’s parents.

Sahil SHO Hikmatullah said police had asked Farhan’s parents to record a statement for the registration of an FIR.

He died on the spot as a result of the crash. However, the family informed officers that they were taking the body to Thatta for burial and would approach the police at a later stage.
