Lahore : As Basant makes a controlled return, authorities have imposed strict regulations, including a ban on kites featuring political, religious or provocative images. The move follows the circulation of images on social media showing kites with portraits of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, sparking concerns over potential law-and-order issues during a politically sensitive period.
The festival, scheduled for February 6 to 8, coincides with a PTI protest call on February 8. In response, the provincial administration has enforced Section 144 across Lahore to prevent the misuse of the celebration for political or religious expression.
Under the order, kites displaying images of political leaders, religious personalities, sacred texts, religious landmarks, national flags or party symbols are strictly prohibited. These restrictions will remain in place for 30 days.
Authorities have also banned the production, sale, transportation, storage and use of kites bearing such designs. Only plain or multi-coloured kites without any imagery will be permitted during the festival.
Officials stated that the measures aim to prevent provocative elements from exploiting Basant to spread political or religious messages. The directives took immediate effect, with law enforcement instructed to act firmly against any violations.
The Punjab government has approved a limited and closely monitored Basant celebration in Lahore from February 6 to 8 through a formal notification issued under the Punjab Kite Flying Act 2025.
