A family was robbed of their belongings and Rs2.8 million in cash at gunpoint by muggers on the Korangi Crossing road in Karachi, it emerged on Friday.
Muggers forced the husband and wife to hand over their phones, wallets and gold chain, and a substantial amount of cash by pointing a gun at their daughter's head.
The couple was on their way to Qayyumabad from Korangi Crossing on a bike when the robbers stopped them on the roadside.
The victim, Ahmed Raza told the police that he was riding his motorcycle with his wife and daughter when four robbers on two motorcycles stopped them.
"Two suspects were wearing masks. One of them pointed a weapon at my daughter's head while the other took my wallet and mobile phone," Ahmad recalled.
“Meanwhile, the bandits pulled the gold chain from the wife's neck, causing her to fall off the bike. The bag, which contained Rs2.8 million in cash, also fell onto the road and was taken by the bandits," he added.
The victim is a yarn business owner. He was carrying a large sum of money to give to his partner in Karachi's DHA area. He said that no one else was aware of the money.
Ahmad revealed he immediately reported the incident to the police but they arrived at the scene too late.
Despite repeated assurances by the Sindh government, street crime continues to plague the metropolis.
A total of 5,951 mugging incidents were reported in August alone, according to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).
During these incidents, 23 cars and 656 motorcycles were taken at gunpoint while 150 cars and 3,385 bikes were stolen from different parts of Karachi.
