The Vice Chancellor of Punjab University has ordered the removal of all air conditioners (ACs) from the university’s hostels in response to concerns over unauthorized use, which has been contributing to financial losses.
According to university sources, many hostel residents have been running ACs for long periods without paying for the electricity, leading to hefty monthly bills for the institution.
The unchecked power consumption has reportedly been costing the university hundreds of thousands of rupees each month.
The administration maintained that ACs are not allowed in hostels, except for foreign students and those with medical conditions who can obtain special permission to install them.
To curb unauthorized usage, officials have announced plans to install circuit breakers to prevent the operation of both air conditioners and heaters.
"The excessive use of ACs and heaters has led to unsustainable electricity bills, and the university cannot continue to bear these costs," explained a representative from the administration.
With hostel fees set at just Rs2,000 per month, the rising electricity expenses have worsened the financial burden on the university.
