QUETTA: The Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) of Balochistan has resolved to pass the law against acid attack incidents swiftly to ensure justice, protection, and rehabilitation for the survivors, after the recent attack on Dr Mahnoor, a trainee doctor in Quetta city.

In the meeting, led by Deputy Speaker Ghazala Gola, all existing laws were revised and also a proposed law prepared in 2016, which is a draft of a comprehensive law against acid attacks.

A review committee has been constituted to improve relevant laws in terms of sale, victim compensation, rehabilitation, and institutional response.

In the future meetings, stakeholders including departmental heads, police, legal persons and others would be invited for consultation.

It has been notified that seven acid attack incidents have taken place in Balochistan since 2021. It was emphasized that a comprehensive law is required at the provincial level in order to prevent such acts.

Dr Mahnoor was victimized due to acid attack, which caused burn injuries on almost 35 percent of her body. She has been shifted to Karachi to receive advanced medical care. The attacker was arrested and then shot dead in a police encounter.
