Bangladesh has imposed an indefinite ban on the telecast of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a day after announcing that its national team will not travel to India for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to security concerns.
The decision follows the release of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman by Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after he reportedly received threats from Hindu extremist groups.
In response to the situation, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) convened an emergency meeting and recommended to the government that the national team should not be sent to India for the T20 World Cup. Acting on the request, Bangladesh’s sports adviser said on Sunday that player safety was the government’s top priority, confirming that the team would not travel to India for the tournament.
The BCB has also formally approached the International Cricket Council (ICC), requesting that Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches be shifted from India to Sri Lanka.
In the latest development, the Bangladesh government announced an indefinite ban on the domestic telecast of the IPL. In a statement, authorities said the restriction would remain in place until further notice.
