A packed Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) fell silent before erupting into applause as Ahmed al-Ahmed stepped onto the field ahead of the final Ashes Test.
With his arm in a sling and his hand placed over his heart, the Syrian-born father of two was welcomed by thousands of spectators.
Al-Ahmed, who played a key role in confronting one of the attackers during the Bondi terror incident, was honoured as part of a tribute ceremony for the victims and those who helped save lives.
He was accompanied by 14-year-old Chaya Dadon, who arrived on crutches after being shot in the leg while protecting two younger children during the attack.
Fans from both Australia and England rose to their feet as the pair made their way across the ground, visibly emotional. Screens around the stadium displayed the names of the 15 people who lost their lives, alongside the message “forever in our hearts”.
A group of first responders also joined the ceremony, including paramedics, hospital doctors, lifesavers and police officers, some of whom had acted while off duty. Australian players Alex Carey and Cameron Green applauded as the honourees passed by.
Addressing the crowd, the stadium announcer said: “Thank you everybody, thank you for sharing our gratitude for the incredible service that these individuals and many others provided.”
