The International Cricket Council (ICC) has been left unsettled after Pakistan refused to play India in the group stage of the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan’s decision has caused concern within cricket’s global governing body, prompting the ICC to explore ways to persuade Pakistan to reconsider its stance.

According to Indian media reports, the ICC is set to initiate back-channel discussions with Pakistan over the T20 World Cup issue. ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khawaja has reportedly been tasked with leading these quiet negotiations.

Imran Khawaja is expected to engage with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on the matter. Representing the Singapore Cricket Association, Khawaja has been assigned the role of convincing the PCB to agree to the fixture.

Indian media further reported that Khawaja has been asked to act as a “peacemaker” in the current situation.

It may be recalled that the Government of Pakistan announced on Sunday, 15 February, that the national team would not play against India in the T20 World Cup.

Indian media also noted that the Pakistan Cricket Board has not yet formally conveyed this decision to the ICC through its official channels.
