Pakistani opener Imam-ul-Haq suffered a serious injury after being struck on the face by a throw that pierced through his helmet grill. The incident occurred during the second innings in the final match of the three-match ODI series at Bay Oval on Saturday.
During the third over of Pakistan's innings Imam attempted a quick single off William O'Rourke’s delivery.
As he ran, a fielder from the cover region threw the ball, which hit the helmet and lodged itself in the grille, striking Imam on the jaw. The force of the impact caused him to fall to the ground in visible pain.
Medical staff and players rushed to his aid immediately. An ambulance was brought onto the field, and Imam was taken off for further assessment. He underwent a concussion test, which he failed, prompting his retirement from the innings. Usman Khan replaced him at the crease.

Imam-ul-Haq is receiving treatment at the on-site emergency medical facility. An official update on his condition is expected soon.
It’s worth noting that in the second ODI on April 3, Haris Rauf also sustained a head injury when a bouncer struck his helmet. He was subsequently withdrawn from the match due to concussion protocols and replaced by Naseem Shah.
In terms of the match situation, Pakistan requires 265 runs to win.

Earlier, New Zealand secured an 84-run victory in the second ODI, gaining a significant lead in the series.
The ICC has also fined Pakistan for maintaining a slow over-rate in that match, deducting 5% of the match fee for falling one over short. Captain Mohammad Rizwan accepted the sanction.
Pakistan had also been penalised for a similar offense in the first ODI.
