Jos Buttler announced on Friday that he is stepping down as England’s white-ball captain following the team’s early exit from the Champions Trophy.
The decision comes after England failed to reach the semi-finals of the tournament.
"I'm going to stand down as England captain; it's the right decision for me and the team," the 34-year-old stated at a press conference.
Under Buttler’s leadership, England struggled to defend their T20 and 50-over World Cup titles. Their Champions Trophy campaign ended after a disappointing defeat to Afghanistan in Lahore on Wednesday.

Buttler took over the white-ball captaincy from Eoin Morgan in 2022 and led England to victory in the T20 World Cup the same year. However, since then, the team has faced a series of setbacks.
They won only three of their nine matches while defending their 50-over World Cup title in India in 2023. In the T20 World Cup last year, England exited in the semi-finals.
Ahead of the Champions Trophy, England also suffered a 3-0 One Day International series whitewash against India.
