Pakistan team director Mohammad Hafeez will not continue in his role after the completion of a three-month tenure due to the team's disappointing performance against Australia and New Zealand.
Despite only a consolation victory in a T20I match, Pakistan faced losses in three Test matches against Australia and four T20Is against New Zealand under Hafeez's leadership.
Upon returning from the challenging tours, Hafeez met with acting PCB chairman Shah Khawer, who oversees the board during the election process for a regular chairman.
Reports suggest that Hafeez didn't impress the acting chairman with his performance, leading to discussions about extending his tenure through the Ministry of Inter-provincial Coordination.
Hafeez, without formal coaching credentials, assumed the role of team director, succeeding South African Mickey Arthur amidst Pakistan's poor performances in the Asia Cup and World Cup last year.
Hafeez was initially appointed by former PCB Interim Management Committee Chairman Zaka Ashraf for a three-month term, and his tenure ended on Jan 14.
Despite Zaka's recommendation for a four-year extension until the next World Cup, the IPC Ministry hasn't given approval yet.
Sources suggest Hafeez blamed senior players' lack of focus for the team's poor performance, noting their preference for foreign leagues over national duties.
Mohammad Rizwan openly criticised Hafeez's strategies during Pakistan's series against New Zealand, attributing setbacks to changes in the batting line-up.
Hafeez, in discussions with the acting PCB chairman, highlighted player performances and accountability, expressing frustration with senior players and attempting to bring in junior players to refresh the team. However, this approach didn't achieve the desired results.
