Pakistan prepare to take on India in the Asia Cup 2025 match in Dubai amidst India team facing calls for boycott back home.
India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate acknowledged that the team is under pressure due to the political circumstances and public sentiments at home. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, he said that the squad and support staff are aware of public's feelings.
“We are fully conscious of the emotions and intensity surrounding this game,” Ten Doeschate said.
He explained that head coach Gautam Gambhir has urged his players to stay focused. “Gauti’s message has been straightforward and professional. Focus and don’t worry about things that are not in our control,” he added.
Ten Doeschate said that even within the Indian camp, players shared public concerns. “I’m certain the players feel the same emotion and concern as most of the Indian public. The Asia Cup had been uncertain for quite some time, and we were simply waiting,” he said.

With calls for boycott in India, Ten Doeschate underlined that the decision to play rested with the government. “At one point, we didn’t expect to be here. But everyone knows the government’s position. Now it’s up to the team, especially the players, to set aside their emotions and feelings. We actually discussed this during the meeting,” he revealed.
He also suggested that the team would not make any political statement, saying that their response would come through their performance. “Sport and politics should be kept apart, though opinions differ on that. Hopefully, our performance on the field can reflect the pride we feel for the country,” Ten Doeschate added.
