Sri Lankan journalist Andrew Fidel Fernando praised Pakistan’s hospitality during his visit to cover the Champions Trophy, recounting his experiences of receiving selfless support from strangers when he encountered various challenges, including a lack of Pakistani currency, internet issues, and difficulties finding his way to the stadium.
An experienced traveler, Fernando shared his heartfelt appreciation in an article for ESPNcricinfo, reflecting on the kindness and respect he encountered in Pakistan. His visit began with a series of setbacks that could have dampened the start of his trip, but the help he received from strangers turned these challenges into positive experiences.
Fernando recounted how Pakistanis would immediately mention cricket legends like Kumar Sangakkara or Lasith Malinga, as soon as he mentioned that he is from Sri Lanka.
He described arriving at Islamabad airport late at night and finding himself without Pakistani currency. A taxi driver, Waqar, went out of his way to help Fernando reach an ATM. However, Fernando faced another obstacle when he was charged double for the cash he withdrew.
Troubled by the situation, Waqar took responsibility for resolving the issue. While Fernando tried to figure out a solution, two strangers stepped in to assist. Even the receptionist and staff at his Airbnb apartment were determined to help him, coming up with a creative solution to settle the fare.
In a cooperative effort, the receptionist paid the driver, while the staff compensated her using a money-exchanging app, allowing Fernando to pay in Sri Lankan currency.
This was just one example of the many instances of selfless assistance Fernando received. Strangers in Rawalpindi shared their favorite local spots with him, and one even offered him a ride. He also engaged in a lighthearted conversation with Pakistani army personnel.

Fernando was overwhelmed by the kindness he experienced, noting that he has traveled to many countries but had never encountered such unconditional compassion.
He reflected, “There is definitely some goodwill between Pakistanis and Sri Lankans that has revealed itself over many imperfect conversations, featuring broken English and non-existent Urdu. I have not thought about any of this for long enough, and I will be processing this visit to Islamabad/Rawalpindi for months to come.”
He continued, “Never have I encountered a time in my life so dense with stories. Never have I had as much fun in my travels, in such a short space of time. The love I felt from complete strangers (all men, and yes, I’m clocking my privilege here) in these twin cities is extraordinary.”
