Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec, famous for his unique pocket-in-hand style during the 10-metre air pistol mixed team event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, has filed to trademark his iconic pose.
The 51-year-old Olympian secured a silver medal at the Summer Games. Dikec's calm and collected demeanor captured people's attention.
Dikec's coach Erdinc Bilgili told the media that “after being informed of numerous trademark registration initiatives carried out without Yusuf Dikec’s knowledge, we submitted an application about a week ago.”
In the event, Yusuf competed without ear protection or specialised glasses designed to block vision in one eye and reduce glare.
Netizens compared Dikec to other shooters in the air pistol mixed team competition, who were all dressed in specialised gear, including goggles, special lenses, and ear protectors.
The Turkish shooter wore prescription glasses and normal earplugs, casually kept one hand in his pocket and accurately hit his target.
Yusuf Dikec's unique style became a sensation, and inspired athletes across various sports to emulate it.
During an English Premier League match, Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson imitated Dikec's iconic pose after scoring against Crystal Palace.
According to Turkish media, Dikec's style not only inspired memes but was also featured on mugs, t-shirts, and mobile phone covers.
Yusuf Dikec reflected on his Paris Olympics win, saying, “At that moment, everyone says I seemed very calm, but actually storms were raging inside me. I think my shooting pose represented the Olympic spirit very well: the fair play, simplicity, clarity and naturalness."
"That’s why it got so much attention. I never needed that equipment. I am a natural. A natural shooter,” he added.
