Former cricketer Saeed Anwar received criticism after he advocated not to allow women to step out of their houses to earn livelihood for their families.
The remarks were made by Anwar a year ago during his lecture at Irving Masjid in Texas, United States (US).
"I've just completed my Australia tour [there] husbands and wives are in a domestic dispute. The conditions there have severely deteriorated as they have allowed women to work," the 55-year-old cricketer could be heard saying in the viral video.
"[....] Australian mayor told me that since they had allowed their women to work, their culture was destroyed," he added in his sermon.
Without quoting any research data, Anwar said that the divorce rate in Pakistan has increased by 30 percent in three years since women stepped out of their house for work.
"It's a complete game plan my friends but you cannot understand it till you get Hidayah," the former cricketer remarked.
However, his statement prompted social media users to slam Anwar for his "outdated thinking" in 21st century.
