Argentina produced a sensational late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and book their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, with captain Lionel Messi playing a decisive role in one of the tournament's most dramatic matches.
The defending champions appeared on the verge of elimination after Egypt raced into a 2-0 lead through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko.
Messi also endured a frustrating first half after seeing his penalty saved by Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, who delivered a string of outstanding saves to keep Argentina at bay.
Egypt thought they had extended their advantage earlier in the second half, but a goal by Ziko was ruled out following a controversial VAR review for a foul in the build-up.
Despite the setback, the Pharaohs restored their two-goal cushion moments later when Ziko found the net after another swift counter-attack.
Argentina mounted a remarkable fightback in the closing stages of the match. Cristian Romero sparked the revival with a headed goal before Messi redeemed himself by firing home the equaliser seven minutes from time, extending his scoring streak to nine consecutive World Cup matches and taking his tournament tally to eight goals.
The dramatic turnaround was completed in stoppage time when Enzo Fernandez headed home the winning goal, sealing a memorable 3-2 victory and sending Argentina into the quarter-finals.
An emotional Messi was seen celebrating with his teammates after the final whistle, while Egypt expressed frustration over several refereeing decisions, including the disallowed goal and a red card shown to a member of the coaching staff after Argentina's winner.
With the victory, Argentina advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the Colombia versus Switzerland clash as they continue their defence of the FIFA World Cup title.
