An inquiry into the fire has also led to the suspension of eight hospital officials, while authorities continue to examine safety failures surrounding the incident.

The court sought a report regarding the responsibility fixed on the Executive Director of PIMS in connection with the incident.

According to reports, former interior secretary Shahid Khan, who headed the inquiry committee, submitted the findings after investigating the causes of the fire. The report recommends disciplinary action against relevant PIMS staff members who were absent during the incident.

Seven gynaecological patients and a child were shifted from PIMS to Holy Family Hospital (HFH), where officials said there was no overcrowding in the gynaecology and paediatrics wards. HFH has prepared a special ward and assigned additional staff to manage patients referred from PIMS.

The victims’ families said that in other countries, such a tragedy would trigger a comprehensive response from the entire system.

It may be recalled that 15 newborn babies were burnt to death when a fire broke out in the nursery of the gynaecology ward at PIMS Hospital in Islamabad on Wednesday morning.
