An incident took place on December 23, 2025, where a pilot of Air India reportedly showed up for duty for a flight from Vancouver to India, under the influence of alcohol.
According to officials, he failed two breathalyzer tests at Vancouver International Airport.
The case was labelled as a “serious matter” by Transport Canada in a formal letter to the airline. They warned that enforcement action by Canadian authorities can be taken on the grave matter.
The breathalyzer test on the pilot was conducted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police after showing concerns about the pilot’s condition. Both tests confirmed that the pilot had consumed alcohol.
Flight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi, was delayed as a result of this incident. The pilot was removed from duty and an alternate pilot was sent to operate the scheduled flight.
Officials of Air India confirmed that the pilot has been taken off flying duties during the ongoing inquiry. It also emphasized its zero-tolerance policy on safety violations by its employees.
The findings of the ongoing investigation are ordered to be submitted to Transport Canada by January 26, 2026 to prevent future occurrences, projecting serious regulatory scrutiny.
Air India said it “regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers” and will take strict disciplinary action if the investigation confirms any violations.
