An American driver has been awarded $50 million (Rs14 billion) in damages after winning a lawsuit against Starbucks, following a hot coffee spill that left him with severe burns and lifelong disfigurement.

Michael Garcia, a California resident, suffered third-degree burns when scalding coffee spilled on him, prompting him to sue the coffee giant for negligence.

According to media reports, the court ruled in Garcia’s favor, ordering Starbucks to pay him $50 million.

The incident occurred in February 2020 when Garcia stopped outside a Starbucks café to collect his order. As a staff member handed him the tray, the hot coffee spilled onto his body, causing severe injuries.

Garcia had to undergo multiple medical procedures and surgeries, including treatment for burns on his genitals. His lawyer argued that Starbucks employees were negligent in securing the coffee cup lids properly, which led to the accident.

While Starbucks expressed sympathy for Garcia, the company denied any wrongdoing, stating, “We do not believe we were at fault for this incident and find the damages awarded to be excessive.” The company also reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards.
