In a provocative statement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shri Giriraj Singh has threatened to demolish more than 300,000 mosques across India that he claimed were built 'illegally' in the country.

According to Indian media, Singh said that if necessary, the government would not hesitate to raze these mosques, "just like in Shimla".

The statement has raised concerns about the Modi government's stance on religious freedom, particularly for Muslims.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the matter is being seen as tacit approval of the Textile Minister's claims, which many consider false and baseless.

Critics argued that Modi's government has consistently tried to restrict Muslims' religious freedom during his two previous terms in power.

The prime examples include the construction of Ram Mandir on the site of the demolished Babri Masjid and ongoing court cases involving historical mosques.

The Modi government's Hindutva policy has not only targeted Muslims but also other minorities, including Christians, and even lower-caste Hindus.

This has led to widespread concerns about the erosion of religious freedom and the marginalisation of minority communities in India.
