The BJP-led government in India’s Uttar Pradesh state has cancelled the Christmas holiday in schools, ordering institutions to hold events marking the birth anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee instead.
Under the directive, issued by the state government, both public and private schools will remain open on 25 December. Schools have been instructed to organise programmes and activities related to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday on that day.
The decision comes at a time when reports have emerged from different parts of India about incidents and alleged harassment targeting the Christian community around Christmas celebrations.
The move has triggered debate, particularly as videos circulating on social media show alleged cases of intimidation and violence against Christians during Christmas events in several states.
There have also been reports of churches and religious gatherings being targeted.
Reacting to the decision, Congress party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said religious minorities feel increasingly insecure under the current government and added that the situation is being closely watched by the international community.
Opposition parties have called on the Uttar Pradesh government to review its decision and ensure respect for the religious festivals of minority communities.
So far, the state government has not issued any further clarification on the matter.
