A Delta Air Lines flight was struck by a firework while landing at Chicago Midway International Airport on Saturday evening, though the aircraft landed safely.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the incident occurred at around 8:30pm local time when the pilot reported that a fireworks mortar hit the aircraft during its descent shortly before landing.

The aircraft, Delta Flight 1076, was travelling from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Chicago.

Air traffic control audio captured the flight crew reporting a loud bang and suggesting it may have been caused by a fireworks mortar exploding beneath the plane. Chicago police were subsequently notified.

Delta said the Airbus A319 landed safely and taxied to the gate without incident.

Chicago police said the firework caused minor paint damage to the aircraft. The airline said the plane was being inspected on Sunday to ensure it had not sustained any further damage.

No passengers or crew members were injured.
