Germany has announced that it is suspending the export of military equipment to Israel that could be used in Gaza over the humanitarian impact of Israel's latest military plans.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed the decision on Friday, following Israel’s announcement that its forces intend to take control of Gaza City as part of a renewed offensive against Hamas.
In a statement, Merz said it was becoming “increasingly unclear” how Israel’s strategy would contribute to the stated goals of disarming Hamas and securing the release of hostages still held in Gaza.
“Under these circumstances, the German government will not authorise any exports of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip until further notice,” he said.

Germany has traditionally been one of Israel’s closest allies, with arms exports to the country sharply rising in recent years.
According to government figures, Berlin approved defence shipments worth €485 million (£410m; $565m) between October 2023 when the current war began and May of this year. These included firearms, ammunition, weapons components, electronic systems, and armoured vehicles.
Despite the suspension, Merz reaffirmed Germany’s support for Israel’s right to self-defence, stating: “The disarmament of Hamas is imperative. Hamas must not play a role in Gaza in future.” He added that Berlin's priorities remain the release of Israeli hostages and a negotiated ceasefire.
Germany’s move signals a significant shift in policy.
