The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday approved US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza by a majority vote, while China and Russia abstained. Meanwhile, Hamas rejected the creation of an international stabilization force, describing it as “foreign guardianship.”
The plan was endorsed by 13 countries, with no state raising objections. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the proposal would help solidify the fragile ceasefire in Gaza.
Speaking about the plan, Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the UN, said the international stabilization force would comprise forces from several countries, whose names have not yet been disclosed. He said the force would provide security, assist in demilitarization, and help dismantle “terrorist infrastructure” in Gaza.
The force would also remove weapons from the enclave and offer protection to Palestinians. The resolution referenced the prospect of an independent Palestinian state, a position repeatedly rejected by Israel, despite Trump’s proposal including it.
Under the proposal, a Board of Peace would oversee a technocratic government and its reconstruction efforts in Gaza. An apolitical committee would also be established. Reconstruction funds would be provided by the World Bank.
“This will go down as one of the biggest approvals in the history of the United Nations, will lead to further peace all over the world, and is a moment of true historic proportion!” Trump wrote on Truth Social after the UN passed his peace plan.
On the other hand, Hamas issued a strongly worded statement, denouncing the stabilization force as unjust and dismissive of Palestinian rights and demands.
According to a message shared on Telegram, Hamas said the plan “imposes an international guardianship mechanism on the Gaza Strip, which our people and their factions reject.”
“Assigning the international force tasks and roles inside the Gaza Strip, including disarming the resistance, strips it of its neutrality and turns it into a party to the conflict in favour of the occupation,” it added.
