On Wednesday, the Chinese and Indian militaries held discussions on managing their shared border and agreed to use established mechanisms to address any “on- ground issues,” both nations announced.

The talks come after a landmark agreement reached in 2024 to ease military tensions along the Himalayan borders, where a deadly clash in 2020 had resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers.

Since the 2024 accord, both sides have taken steps to improve bilateral relations, including the resumption of direct flights and an increase in trade and investment flows.

According to China’s Defence Ministry, the latest round of high level military talks took place on Saturday on the Indian side of the border meeting point. Both countries agreed to maintain communication through military and diplomatic channels to ensure stability.

“Both sides agreed to continue utilizing existing mechanisms to resolve any ground issues along the border and uphold peace,” India’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In August, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first visit to China in seven years to attend a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. During the visit, Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed that India and China are partners in development rather than rivals and explored ways to strengthen trade ties amid ongoing global tariff challenges.
