In a shocking incident, a woman in India allegedly poisoned her husband to death after observing a day-long fast for his long life on Karva Chauth, local media reported on Tuesday.
The festival, celebrated by married Hindu women worldwide, involves a 'virat' or fast for long lives and health of their husbands.
According to Indian media reports, Savita poisoned Shailesh Kumar, 32, on suspicion of infidelity.
Police officials revealed that an argument erupted between the couple during the breaking of the fast.
Shailesh's brother alleged that his sister-in-law had poisoned his brother's food.
The brother's statement to the police stated that Savita had killed Shailesh.
The husband was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to death during treatment.
Following the incident, police arrested the victim and initiated an investigation, with further action being taken against the accused.
Karva Chauth, a festival in Hinduism, symbolises the unconditional love and devotion of wives toward their husbands. However, the tragic event has marred the spirit of the celebration.
