A fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran has paved the way for high-level talks in Islamabad, where delegations from both countries are expected to meet on April 11.

The development follows intense back-channel diplomacy, with Donald Trump announcing a two-week ceasefire earlier this week. The truce came amid fears of further escalation after weeks of conflict.

According to reports, both sides have exchanged proposals aimed at ending hostilities, although details have not been officially disclosed. Leaked versions suggest significant differences, making the upcoming talks critical.

The US delegation is expected to be led by Vice President JD Vance, who has recently played a key role in mediation efforts. He has been in contact with intermediaries in Pakistan and signalled Washington’s openness to a ceasefire, while also warning of increased pressure if negotiations fail.

Other figures linked to US efforts include envoy Steve Witkoff and former adviser Jared Kushner, though Iran has reportedly expressed reservations about engaging with them.

Iran’s side is expected to be represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, a seasoned diplomat known for his role in previous nuclear negotiations. He has consistently criticised US-Israeli strikes while also engaging in diplomatic outreach.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is also seen as an influential figure, given his strong ties to Iran’s security establishment.

The Islamabad talks are being closely watched globally, as they are seen as a potential pathway to de-escalation. However, lingering mistrust and ongoing tensions continue to pose challenges to any lasting agreement.
