Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally nominated US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, claiming that peace in the Middle East is achievable under Trump’s leadership. The announcement, however, was met with widespread criticism and ridicule online, with many pointing out that both leaders are responsible for conflicts in the Middle East.

During a meeting at the White House, Netanyahu presented the nomination letter as a gift to Trump in the presence of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pat Hegseth, and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

Speaking at the event, Netanyahu said, “I express my gratitude to President Trump not only on behalf of all Israelis but also the Jewish people for the opportunities he has provided, particularly the Abraham Accords. He is forging peace across nations and regions.”

He added, “So I want to present to you, Mr President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize Committee, nominating you for the Peace Prize, which is well-deserved.”

In response, Trump said, “Thank you very much. Coming from you in particular, this means a lot.” He went on to highlight past US-Israel collaborations and expressed hope for continued success.

Trump also claimed that the US had destroyed three of Iran’s nuclear facilities and said he hoped there would be no further need for military action. “Iran is no longer where it was two weeks ago,” he said.

Addressing US-Iran relations, Trump remarked, “We have very biting sanctions on Iran. I would love to lift them at the right time, give them a chance to rebuild peacefully rather than chanting ‘death to America’ and ‘death to Israel.’ They used to be the bully of the Middle East. Not anymore.”

He also listed diplomatic efforts involving India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Rwanda and Congo.

Trump said he is also trying to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine, but expressed disappointment with President Vladimir Putin for failing to end the conflict.

Meanwhile, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff revealed that nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran are expected to begin next week.

On the Palestinian issue, Netanyahu said he was exploring, alongside the US, “countries that can offer Palestinians a better future,” but did not specify whether that included housing or statehood.

When asked about the two-state solution, Netanyahu said Palestinians should have the right to self-govern but not the power to threaten Israel. “That means overall security will remain in our hands,” he said.

For the first time since the current war in Gaza began, Netanyahu stated that Palestinians who wish to stay in Gaza can remain. However, he emphasised that Israel would retain security control regardless of whether the area is called a Palestinian state or not.

The high-profile dinner came as indirect ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas continue. This was Netanyahu’s third meeting with Trump since assuming office for the second time.

Outside the White House, pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in protest against Netanyahu’s visit and his ongoing military campaign in Gaza.
