An Iranian woman in her 50s has been put on trial after being accused of killing her 11 husbands over 22 years. The allegations emerged after the death of one of her husbands sparked suspicions and led to an investigation.
The probe was launched after victims’ families raised alarms over the circumstances of the deaths of Kolsoum Akbari’s husbands. She is charged with 11 counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
The first death of a husband dates back to 2001, with investigation reports stating that she allegedly poisoned her 11 husbands over 22 years. The motive behind her crimes was to claim the dowry and inheritance of her partners.
In 2023, elderly Azizollah Babaei died in mysterious circumstances, and an autopsy could not determine the cause of death.
The twist came when Babaei’s son came into contact with a family friend who shared a similar story about his father, who had married a woman named Kolsoum Akbari. She allegedly tried to poison him, but he survived and later divorced her.

The emergence of two such similar stories raised suspicion around Akbari. During the investigation, she confessed to killing her husbands.
Details shared by Iranian media revealed that she used “a mix of diabetes and sexual performance medications , sometimes combined with industrial alcohol” to weaken her husbands over time.
The accused even reenacted the crime, and police recorded a video of her after which she admitted to poisoning her husbands but attempted to contradict some details of her horrific crimes.
Akbari now faces allegations from several individuals who are heirs of the victims and have joined the prosecution, with 45 plaintiffs ready to prove her crimes.
The verdict of the case will be delivered after the conclusion of the hearing.
