Israel has endorsed a US-backed proposal to extend the truce in Gaza as a bridging measure, covering Ramadan (ending late March) and Passover (lasting through mid-April), according to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office released just after midnight on Sunday.
The first phase of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas was set to expire over the weekend without confirmation of a second phase that could lead to a more permanent resolution.
Under the proposed truce extension, half of the hostages still held in Gaza would be released when the deal takes effect, with the remainder freed at the end, contingent on an agreement for a permanent ceasefire.
There was no immediate response from Hamas, which had previously rejected the idea of an extension.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned against a "catastrophic" return to war, stressing the need for a permanent ceasefire and the release of all hostages to prevent further humanitarian suffering.

Meanwhile, Washington has announced an increase in military aid to Israel, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio expediting the delivery of $4 billion in military assistance, reversing a partial arms embargo imposed under former President Joe Biden.
