A Muslim security guard received praise on social media for bravely stopping a knife attack in London’s busy theatre district and immediately overpowering the assailant.
The incident occurred on Sunday when an 11-year-old girl and a 34-year-old woman were wounded in a stabbing attack.
Due to the quick intervention of a Muslim security guard, the victims avoided life-threatening injuries.
The 29-year-old Abdullah, who is a securityman at TWG Tea shop in Leicester Square, explained the incident while speaking to the BBC.
“I heard a scream and went outside to see a man with a knife,” Abdullah said. “The moment I saw it, I just jumped on him, grabbed his hand, put him down on the floor and kicked the knife away. I had no time, I just didn’t think.”
After Abdullah overpowered the assailant, his colleagues immediately intervened to protect the young girl and provide first aid to her.
A few minutes later, emergency services and the police arrived at the scene and took control of the situation.
The incident of a Muslim man saving lives occurred shortly after anti-immigration riots had swept through England.
Muslims were targeted due to false rumours about the religious identity of the suspect involved in the Southport stabbing attack that killed three children.
Following days of racist demonstrations and violence against Muslims, netizens were quick to highlight that the man who saved the girl from the stabbing was, in fact, a Muslim.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan paid tribute to Abdullah, "who heroically risked his own safety to come to the aid of the victims."
I remain in close contact with the Met about the appalling attack in central London today. A man has been arrested & is in custody. On behalf of Londoners I’d like to pay tribute to Abdullah, who heroically risked his own safety to come to the aid of the victims.
