Israeli airstrikes on Gaza early Tuesday resulted in at least 400 fatalities, marking the deadliest escalation since a ceasefire agreement took effect in January.
The strikes followed Hamas' failure to release hostages, according to Israeli officials.
The White House confirmed that US President Donald Trump was consulted before the operation. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the U.S. administration supported Israel’s actions, emphasizing consequences for Hamas and its allies.
Israel targeted multiple locations, including Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and Rafah, describing the strikes as preemptive actions against Hamas leadership and infrastructure.
However, Palestinian health officials reported that many casualties included women and children.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the operation as “open-ended,” signaling a potential extension of hostilities.
The attacks came amid stalled ceasefire negotiations, which had initially led to a six-week truce and hostage exchanges.
The escalation raised concerns over the fate of hostages still held in Gaza.
Hamas accused Israel of violating the truce, while mediators urged both sides to return to negotiations.
Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi rebels condemned the airstrikes, warning of possible retaliation in the Red Sea.
