Trump links US-Saudi nuclear deal to recognising Israel

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said a proposed civil nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia would only be approved if the kingdom joins the Abraham Accords, while stressing that the deal would not permit uranium enrichment.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the agreement would cover only civilian nuclear activities, such as power generation, and would exclude any enrichment of nuclear material.

"The Civil Nuclear Deal (There will be no enrichment of material!)... will be approved, but is totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords," Trump wrote.

The remarks came after the United States and Saudi Arabia reached an agreement on civil nuclear cooperation that would allow the kingdom to develop nuclear reactors using US technology.

The Trump administration said the agreement complies with the non-proliferation requirements of the US Atomic Energy Act, describing them as among the strongest safeguards in the world.

Saudi Arabia has consistently maintained that it will not join the Abraham Accords or normalise relations with Israel without an agreed roadmap towards Palestinian statehood.

The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan established ties with Israel under the Abraham Accords during Trump's first term in office.

Saudi Arabia said the proposed agreement would support its efforts to diversify energy sources while adhering to the highest international standards of nuclear safety, security and non-proliferation.
