Couple misses flight to Peurto Rico after ChatGPT wrongly told them no visa required

A Spanish couple missed their flight after failing to obtain a visa for a Caribbean island, following incorrect advice from ChatGPT that no visa was required.

Mery Caldass, popular influencer on TikTok, shared the ordeal in a video on TikTok, explaining how the AI “misled” them with false information, ultimately costing them their trip to Peurto Rico .

Caldass said that although she usually researches travel requirements herself, this time she relied on ChatGPT, which proved to be a costly mistake. While recounting the experience, she became teary-eyed as her partner tried to comfort her.

The influencer further claimed that the chatbot “sometimes tries to take revenge” because she insults it. “I don’t trust it anymore because sometimes I call it useless or a b*****d… and this was its revenge,” she said.

The video quickly went viral on TikTok, amassing over six million views.

While many users mocked the couple for relying on AI for crucial travel information, others expressed surprise.

Some commenters even noted that when they asked ChatGPT about visas, it stated that European travelers did not need one, but mentioned the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) requirement which is required in the US.

Others suggested that the couple could have easily found the basic information by searching online.

The couple, however, managed to continue their trip, sharing videos from Puerto Rico where they were enjoying their time.

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT is used by 500 million people daily. OpenAI also stated that the chatbot now thinks and acts following its latest updates.
