The wooden door prop used in the final scene of the popular Hollywood movie "Titanic," where it served as a makeshift raft for the actress Rose, sold for $718,750 at Heritage Auctions in Dallas.
In the 1997 movie "Titanic," Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) found themselves adrift in the freezing Atlantic Ocean after the ship sank While Rose clung to a large piece of debris, Jack tragically succumbed to the freezing water and his body disappeared into the depths.
According to Jack's dialogue in the film, the wooden door was not large enough to support both him and Rose.
In 2012, Titanic director James Cameron revealed he received dozens of emails daily calling Rose selfish and Jack stupid. However, he defended the ending, stating that Jack's death was necessary for the story's emotional impact.
According to the auction house, the wooden plank was made from a piece of wreckage recovered after the Titanic disaster in 1912. Bidding on the prop opened at $60,000, and within six minutes topped $700,000 as the auctioneer attracted potential bidders, explaining the prop’s importance to the plot.
As per the report, the board is about 8 feet long and 41 inches wide.
Other items in the auction included Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which sold for $525,000.
However, the intricately designed "Titanic" wood panel stole the spotlight, far surpassing its initial valuation of $40,000 and ultimately selling for a whopping $718,750.
Several other "Titanic" props were also up for auction, including the pastel chiffon evening gown worn by Rose in the movie during the sinking scene and the ship's helm wheel, which sold for $118,750 and $200,000, respectively.
