In a shocking incident, a man resorted to stealing motorcycles to fund the cancer treatment of his best friend's wife, it emerged on Saturday.

Indian media said the 30-year-old suspect, identified as Ashok, was arrested by police for his involvement in the thefts.

According to local media reports, Ashok was staying with his friend Satish after he parted ways from his wife.

When he learned that Satish's wife was suffering from cancer and his friend couldn't afford treatment, Ashok tried to borrow money but was unsuccessful, local media said.

Ashok and his accomplice, 34-year-old Satish alias Sathya, started stealing motorcycles parked outside houses.

The police recovered eight bikes worth INR1.71 million (over Rs3.3 million Pakistani rupees) from Satish's possession.

"A citizen lodged a complaint of bike theft at Girinagar police station. After reviewing the CCTV footage, we identified Ashok's involvement and arrested him," said the police.

The accused would break the locks of the bikes and sell them in rural areas at lower prices, police added.
