OpenAI has been sued over allegations that medical advice generated by its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, contributed to a delay in seeking medical treatment.
According to The New York Times, the lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT provided misleading medical guidance to a U.S. resident, causing him to postpone seeking professional medical care.
The complaint claims that the delay resulted in a severe health emergency that could have been life-threatening.
The newspaper reported that a pastor, Scott Winters, alleges ChatGPT gave him highly dangerous medical recommendations, which delayed timely treatment for a pulmonary embolism in his lungs and placed his life at risk.
According to the lawsuit, ChatGPT repeatedly reassured Winters that the early symptoms of his condition were not serious.
The complaint also alleges that the chatbot discouraged him from seeking additional medical advice from other sources.
The allegations are contained in the lawsuit and have not been established in court.
