Model Colony residents raise alarm over sewage crisis and damaged roads

District Colony, Model Colony: Dialogue Pakistan Reporter visited the area and spoke to residents about the deteriorating condition of roads and the ongoing sewage crisis.

Residents say the area has been severely affected, with stagnant sewage water, damaged roads, and disruptions to essential utilities making daily life increasingly difficult.

One resident described the situation as a consequence of the ongoing BRT project, saying, “This is the gift we have received from the BRT project. It has become a nightmare for us. Essential utilities have been disrupted, including gas and water. Nobody seems to care about how the public is managing.”

The resident also questioned the authorities’ priorities, saying that while campaigns such as polio drives are carried out with considerable attention, the ongoing sewage problem remains largely unaddressed.

“If the ruling class had to live in these conditions outside their own homes, would they be able to tolerate it? They would not be able to bear it for even a minute,” the resident said.

Another resident said that the situation has forced some people to leave their homes because normal life has become nearly impossible. Daily commuting has become extremely difficult, while residents, including children, are struggling to reach the local mosque and madrasa because of the sewage and damaged roads.

Residents said the situation has persisted for approximately a month.

Another resident claimed that the stagnant sewage water has contributed to health concerns, with cases of typhoid, malaria, and dengue being reported in the area. Residents also complained about severe mosquito infestations, particularly at night, making it difficult for families to sleep.

According to residents, the problem began after the BRT construction damaged a main sewerage line, subsequently causing sewage to overflow into the surrounding area.

One resident showed the extent of the damage inside his home, saying, “There is sewage water inside my house. What are we supposed to do?”

Residents also recalled an incident in which a woman reportedly fell into the sewage water. In an attempt to deal with the situation, residents said they have been filling affected areas with soil.

Frustrated by what they describe as prolonged official inaction, some residents said they will collect the sewage water in tubs and take it to the relevant authorities as a symbolic protest.

Residents also called on Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and other officials to personally visit the area and witness the conditions for themselves.

“Those who deliver big speeches should come to Model Colony and visit Jinnah Avenue to see the situation of the people here. Officials should step out of their air-conditioned offices and see what residents are going through,” one resident said.

The residents are demanding immediate action to restore the damaged sewerage system, repair the roads, address the disruption to essential utilities, and provide relief to families affected by the ongoing crisis.
