In a move to provide relief to the masses, the federal government is likely to abolish the Rs35 monthly Pakistan Television (PTV) fee added to electricity bills.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to formally announce the decision soon, which could benefit over 40 million electricity consumers, including residential, commercial, and industrial users.

For years, the mandatory PTV fee has brought in approximately Rs1.5 billion each month, translating to nearly Rs16 billion annually.

The funds collected directly from consumers are funneled the state-run broadcaster.

A senior official familiar with the discussions said the move is intended to ease financial pressure on the public and offer  some relief amid rising power costs.
