FO rejects claims CDF Munir visited Iran as US envoy

The Foreign Office (FO) on Thursday rejected claims that Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir visited Iran as an envoy of US President Donald Trump or the United States, calling the reports “misleading and factually incorrect”.

FO Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Munir’s day-long visit to Tehran on August 24 was undertaken in the context of Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between Washington and Tehran and help ease the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

He said discussions during the visit focused on regional de-escalation, breaking the military stalemate and exploring a negotiated settlement aimed at restoring peace and stability.

“The visit was undertaken purely in the context and backdrop of Pakistan’s role as a mediator,” Andrabi said during a weekly press briefing in Islamabad.

He said the visit reflected Pakistan’s efforts to help bridge differences between the United States and Iran, adding that the Iranian leadership had appreciated Islamabad’s efforts towards de-escalation and a peaceful resolution.

The spokesperson said Pakistan would continue diplomatic engagement with regional countries and support efforts to revive peace talks and seek a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the conflict.
