Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has addressed concerns about the solar net metering policy, reassuring that the current framework remains intact and no alterations are being planned.
Speaking during a Senate session chaired by Sherry Rehman, Minister Leghari responded to attention notices regarding the policy. He emphasized that there have been no discussions or decisions to discontinue the solar net metering system.
On the contrary, he noted a substantial increase in the adoption of solar net metering over the past five to six years, a trend he attributes to the significant reduction in solar panel prices in Pakistan.
This price drop has made renewable energy more accessible and attractive to the general public.
The minister also highlighted the government's success in managing the revolving energy debt, ensuring it does not escalate. This fiscal management has been crucial in maintaining financial stability within the energy sector.
Additionally, Leghari mentioned ongoing reforms in the power sector, including a noteworthy agreement between Solar Net Metering and the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra). This agreement aims to streamline the process of buying and selling energy by consolidating these transactions under a single contract.
He welcomed further investments in the solar sector, reaffirming that the existing net metering policy will remain unchanged. He assured the Senate that any future amendments to the policy would be implemented transparently, with all stakeholders being duly informed.
