In a bid to control rising sugar prices, Pakistan’s Ministry of National Food Security said on Tuesday that the country will import 500,000 metric tons of sugar through the public sector.
The decision was approved by the federal cabinet, the ministry said in an official statement.
This measure reflects the country’s typical response to market fluctuations, exporting surplus sugar stocks in times of abundance and turning to imports when local supplies fall short and prices surge.
According to market analysts, retail sugar prices have soared to Rs200 per kilogram, a sharp increase from Rs130 in January.
Last year, the government permitted the export of 250,000 tons of sugar, as reported by local media.
