A joint study by Sun Yat-sen University, Xiamen University, and Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland has discovered that laughter is equally effective as eye drops in treating dry eye disease.
The chronic eye condition affects an estimated 360 million people worldwide, with its prevalence increasing due to prolonged screen time and air pollution.
The study, published in the British Medical Journal, involved 300 patients divided into two groups: one instructed to laugh and the other to use eye drops.
The 8-week trial revealed that laughter significantly alleviated dry eye symptoms, with benefits persisting for at least 4 weeks. In contrast, the effects of eye drops did not last as long.
Researchers found that laughter improves tear quality and visual functions, possibly by activating muscles and nerves that stimulate tear production.
While further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms, the study suggested that laughter could be a cheap, eco-friendly, and sustainable treatment for dry eye disease.
The breakthrough adds to the growing body of evidence highlighting laughter's therapeutic benefits, including its use in treating dementia.
By incorporating laughter into their daily routine, individuals may find relief from dry eye discomfort and improve their overall eye health.
