Sindh Governor Nehal Hashmi on World Environment Day stressed the need for urgent climate action, forest restoration and stronger partnerships to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development in Pakistan.
He was speaking at a seminar organised by the Hands Welfare Foundation in collaboration with the Poverty Alleviation Fund. The event brought together policymakers, environmental experts, researchers, students and development partners to discuss climate-related issues and strategies for environmental sustainability.
Addressing the gathering, the governor said Pakistan was facing growing climate threats, including rising temperatures and environmental degradation, and emphasised the importance of immediate and coordinated action to mitigate their impact. He noted that delays in environmental restoration efforts could further increase ecological losses.
Chairman of Hands Welfare Foundation Dr Tanveer Ahmed said environmental protection and sustainable development were collective responsibilities and required collaboration among government institutions, civil society organisations and local communities.
During a panel discussion, experts highlighted key environmental concerns, including air pollution, urban forestry, sustainable agriculture, climate-induced disasters and access to clean energy. Speakers also discussed the effects of climate change on public health, water resources and vulnerable communities.
