Pakistani actress Javeria Abbasi has spoken out in defence of her daughter, Anzela Abbasi, after she faced criticism for appearing in a burkini during the Miss Universe Pakistan 2024 pageant.
In a recent interview, Javeria said she was proud of Anzela for representing herself with confidence and modesty, despite public scrutiny. “Even when she appeared in a burkini, people still found reasons to criticise,” Javeria remarked, calling the backlash unnecessary.
Anzela, who secured a place among the top 21 contestants in the competition, received mixed reactions online — with some praising her for maintaining cultural values, while others questioned her decision to participate.
Javeria reiterated her full support for her daughter’s choices, saying, “I completely stand by Anzela. She did what she believed in, and that’s what matters most.”
The actress also reflected on her own recent marriage, revealing that her nikah was performed under both Sunni and Shia traditions — a ceremony she affectionately described as a “dual nikah” or “Su-Shi wedding.” She said the event beautifully blended customs from both families.
