Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, known for his movies in Hindi and Telugu cinema, often tackling social issues, sparked outrage for mocking Gaza in his X post on Diwali celebration.
On Monday, Varma was vehemently criticised for drawing comparison between Diwali fireworks and the ongoing devastation in Gaza. During the weekend’s Diwali celebrations, he wrote, “In India, only one day is Diwali and in Gaza, every day is Diwali ,” punctuating the post with three fire emoji’s. Many found his post disturbing.
The post was met with widespread condemnation. Many expressed disbelief that a public figure of his stature could display such a lack of empathy and humanity, especially in the context of civilians’ massacre and the suffering of children in Gaza.
Critics were quick to point out that framing a genocid as a joke was deeply offensive and unacceptable.
Mixed people from all over the world started to criticize Varma, for his lack of humanity and calling his statement disgusting.
“This is one of the major reasons why there is a surge of hatred for Indians in Europe, America, New Zealand, Australia, South East Asia, Japan and Africa.” An X user said
Another critic added “Ram Gopal Varma ji please delete the tweet. That creates hate against both Hindus and Muslims. You are not doing any favour to both communities. Creating hatred.”
While the furor Varma’s words have elicited shows there are still people in India who hold humanity above their identity but there were more troubling indicators in Varma’s post and its comment section.

I donāt get Indians monstrous obsession with Gaza that it brings the worst out of them. They neither have geographical nor religious ties to the place or any side. You really have to be the worst human being to cheer for suffering of someone so unrelated to you https://t.co/pOCHPtyQ5D
