Squid Game diretor Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that the immense stress of producing the hit Netflix series caused him to lose "eight or nine" teeth.
The South Korean thriller, which became a global sensation after its 2021 release, follows financially desperate contestants who risk their lives in deadly children's games for a life-changing cash prize.
Despite the series' success, Hwang explained during an interview with BBC that he didn’t earn much from the first season, and the potential financial rewards of a second season convinced him to return.
"Honestly, I didn’t make much, so the second season will help make up for it," he shared, also noting that the story was no’t fully finished.
When asked about losing his six teeth during the shooting of the series, Hwang immediately corrected the interviewer, stating, "It was eight or nine."
With most of the original characters killed off in season one, Hwang now faces the challenge of introducing new characters and designing fresh deadly games.
Lee Jung-jae will reprise his role as Gi-hun, the show’s fictional winner, who will return with the goal of dismantling the game and protecting the new contestants.
The upcoming season is also expected to delve deeper into unanswered questions, such as the motivations behind the mysterious Front Man who oversees the game and the true purpose of the deadly competition.
The second series of Squid Game will be released on Netflix on 26 December 2024.
