Two Pakistani Americans achieve victory in Texas state assembly elections

Two Pakistani-American candidates from the Democratic Party, Salman Bhojani and Suleman Lalani, secured victories for a second consecutive term in the Texas State House elections.
Salman Bhojani, originally from Karachi made an unprecedented achievement by winning unopposed in the 92nd district of the Texas State Assembly.
Bhojani, who received 4,175 votes, was re-elected on the Democratic Party ticket. His current term, which began on January 10, 2023, will end on January 14, 2024.
A graduate of the University of Texas, Dallas, and Southern Methodist University, Bhojani has a background in law and previously served on the city council.
During his first term, he introduced a bill urging Texas Governor Greg Abbott to use state resources for a ceasefire in Gaza, demonstrating his commitment to global issues.
Meanwhile, Suleman Lalani successfully defended his seat in the Texas State Assembly, winning 56.1% of the vote with 32,141 votes against Republican Lee Simmons, who garnered 43.9% with 25,197 votes.
Lalani, a medical doctor by profession, represents the 76th district. He assumed office on January 10, 2023, with his term also ending on January 14, 2024.
He has been an advocate for key social causes during his tenure, including pushing for a resolution calling on the US Congress and the President to end the Israeli military offensive in Gaza.
He also played a significant role in recognising Diwali as a state holiday, allowing students to take exams on alternative dates to observe the festival.
Furthermore, his efforts led to the passage of numerous bills improving education and healthcare, and the establishment of the Artificial Advisory Council in Texas.
