Malir Jail escapee takes own life in Karachi’s Mauripur area

An alleged escaped inmate of Malir Jail was found hanging in a house in Karachi’s Mauripur area on Thursday, according to the police. 

The police said rescue officials transported the body to a hospital after discovering it. Authorities identified the deceased as Raza, a former inmate who had escaped custody earlier this week.

Raza had been jailed in connection with a drug case registered at Eidgah police station.

Police said Raza was among the 216 prisoners who broke out of Malir District Jail during a chaotic evacuation following an earthquake on Monday. He is believed to have taken his own life after fleeing the prison.

The alarming development came as authorities considered taking strict action against inmate who committed the crime of breaking jail. 

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah warned the all inmates to voluntarily return to the jails otherwise they will be treated under the law related to jail break. 

Apart from re-arresting prisoners, the authorities have been conducting intensive search operations since the jailbreak.

Of the 216 escapees, 105 have been recaptured so far, while 111 remain at large. Initial reports indicate that 83 prisoners were re-arrested by Tuesday night, with the number increasing to 105 by Wednesday.

Sindh Prisons Minister Ali Hassan Zardari visited Malir Jail on Wednesday to review the situation. Prison officials briefed him on ongoing search efforts and confirmed that family visitations have resumed following improved security measures.

The incident has raised serious concerns about prison security and the circumstances surrounding the mass escape. Investigations are underway to determine how the escape occurred and whether further actions are needed to prevent such incidents in the future.
