The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) company categorically denied implementing gas load shedding in any part of Karachi during nighttime, while consumers have been complaining about experiencing gas outages during mealtimes.
The ongoing gas crisis prompted residents to switch from natural gas to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to fulfill their cooking needs, despite paying high charges for gas connections."
However, the SSGC refuted the claims of domestic consumers and said, “The company continues to prioritise the domestic consumers” as part of its load-shedding management plan.
“No gas load shedding is carried out during the night for domestic sectors, with pressure profiling being conducted to ensure better gas supply during these hours,” it added.
The authorities acknowledged that a gas shortage is due to declining reserves. They noted that the demand for natural gas has been steadily increasing since 2017, resulting in a demand-supply gap of 40%.
According to an SSGC spokesperson, the company has restored gas distribution to several areas in Karachi, including Thal and Shahdadkot. The restoration efforts encompass areas in the metropolis, particularly those in the tail-end, such as Defence and Lyari.
Sharing details about work on the project, he said that half of the work at Lyari station has been completed. Remaining work is expected to be completed by the mid-2025.
